A premium YELLOW golf ball
I played 18 holes with 3 brands of yellow golf balls. Wilson FG Tour, Titleist NXT Tour S and Callaway Chrome Hex. I prefer the yellow color for visibility and have used almost all brands of yellow golf balls. On this day I found that all 3 brands of these high quality golf balls were similar in performance. The Wilson FG Tour was the softest in feel on all shots from the driver to the wedge. The FG tour's are somewhat sticky when removed from the package. I found This stickiness tended to discolor the ball after a few holes and then coating turned smooth. The Titleist and Callaway were very similar in feel and performance with the exception of the Callaway felt softer in feel and it seemed to perform slightly better for me around the greens. The Titleist is better of the "T's" and feels crisper on all shots. On par 3's the Callaway Hex is excellent. Shot shaping is predictable. The ball doesn't seem to carry as far as the Titleist. The ball feels like it lands and comes to a stop...

i(x) upgrade?
When I finally accepted the fact that some balls work much better than others for my swing, I found the Tour i(x) was a great ball for me and I loved the way it stuck when it hit the green [even backed a few up]. Then they stopped making them (why?) and I "assumed" that the i(z) and i(s) would bring some or more of the good things I found in the i(x)....wrong. You can still bang them down range with not much difference, but they don't work right around the green. I recently had a set of irons made and thought that might make a difference with stopping the balls, but so far it doesn't look promising.
I bought a box of Hex Chrome and played with them in an outing yesterday. I don't have the iron distances dialed in yet, but when the ball did hit the green, it stuck. It might be a bit early to make absolute conclusions [there was a little rain before we started], but I have a suspicion I'm going to be selling the unused s & z boxes.
Surprisingly Great Ball
So my golf ball experiment continues. My goal is to find a good ball in the $30 or less per/box range. This month's trial was with the Hex Chrome. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of this ball. I have no idea what my swing speed is, but I felt like this ball was very responsive off the tee. It has a softer feel from others I have tried in this price range and ball flight is pretty consistent. That said, miss-hits do tend to get away from you with this ball but when you hittem where they are suppose to be, you can easily find the fairway with lots of added role. What surprised me the most was the control of this ball on the greens. My biggest complaint about balls in this price range is the loss of the higher spin rate on the greens you can typically get with a tour quality ball. That said the Hex was surprisingly solid on the greens for me. Two more brands to test but the Hex may be my ball of choice moving forward.
